A letter from Dr. Jon Lindgren President of the North Dakota AAUP and President of the Dakotas ACLU

To whom it may concern:

I volunteered to act as Glenda Miskin's advisor during her hearing at the University of North Dakota. Prior to the hearing I reviewed and talked to UND staff about the rules which were to be followed at the hearing. I simply could not believe that the system allowed the faculty member who was making charges to have, not only representation by a full time staff member of the University's Administration, but a seemingly unlimited budget with which the University on behalf of the faculty member could write, publish and distribute information damaging to the students case and career.

To my astonishment, these turned out to be the rules which were used to conduct the hearing. Glenda was forced to defend herself, cross examine and articulate her case while the Professor could rely on a paid staff of several people.

One of the most unethical tactics of the UND Administration was extensive use, by the Administration, of a "list of traits" or
characteristics of "stalkers". This list, had been provided to those who had attended a workshop on stalking several months prior to Glenda's hearing. UND used this list of  "traits."  The list included many, many "traits". Any person, picked at random, would likely have some, but not all of these traits. It was pointed out that convicted stalkers never have all the traits on the list but had various combinations.

Allowing such material to be introduced as proof that Glenda is or was a "stalker" and left unchallenged by professional council seem even more than unethical. It is character assassination. It is the same method used Salem during the witchhunts. Women with certain "characteristics" (traits) were convicted of being witches.

Law enforcement personnel certainly use "profiles" when they are trying to prevent crimes such as hijackers or find fleeing suspects. But charges are not filed based based on these profiles. Charges are to be based on evidence. While UND presented some "evidence", i.e., things that Glenda did, it's primary preoccupation during the hearing was with the list
of "traits". One irony is that the University's prosecutor, Jerry Bulisco, seemed to me to have several of the "traits" of a stalker himself. Another is that the Grand Forks Police Department had all the information that the UND Committee had but did not file stalking charges against Glenda.

The series of meetings at which it was decided Glenda must be terminated as a student at UND was not a hearing, it was lynching.

I would be happy to provide present my views on what happened to Glenda in any venue which would assist her in receiving her just treatment in this matter.
