8:30-10:00 a.m. Tribal Court Jurisdiction and Practice - B.J. Jones
  B.J. Jones is Director of the Northern Plains Tribal Judicial Training Institute at the University of North Dakota School of Law. He received his J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1984. He serves as Chief Judge for the Sisseton-Wahpeton Tribal Court, Chief Appellate Judge for the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians Tribal Court, Appellate Judge of the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe and Special Judge for the Spirit Lake Tribal Court. As Director of the NPTJTI, Jones is responsible for the training of tribal court judges and their court personnel.

  Tom Lockney, Bruce Quick and Mark Friese 
  Tom Lockney is a Professor of Law at UND School of Law. He received his J.D. from the University of Texas in 1970 and his LL.M. from the Harvard Law School in 1974. Lockney joined the UND School of Law faculty in 1971. He teaches and researches in the criminal law area. Lockney has spoken at many seminars for Municipal J.D. Judges on the subjects of criminal law and procedure.

Bruce Quick received his J.D. in 1978 from the University of North Dakota School of Law. He practices criminal defense law with the firm of Vogel, Brantner, Kelly, Knutson, Weir & Bye, Ltd., Fargo and is an adjunct faculty member at the UND School of Law teaching Criminal Advocacy. Quick was Deputy Attorney General of North Dakota for several years prior to joining the Vogel firm.

Mark Friese is a 2000 graduate of the UND School of Law. He served as clerk to Justice Dale Sandstrom of the ND Supreme Court and is currently with the firm of Vogel, Brantner, Kelly, Knutson, Weir & Bye, Ltd., Fargo. Prior to law school, Friese was a uniformed patrolman.

1:00-2:00 p.m. Criminal Defense I - Tom Dickson
  Thomas A. Dickson is a partner in the Dickson and Purdon Law Firm in Bismarck, ND. He attended the Monterey Institute of Foreign Studies receiving his B.A. in 1977 and Southern Methodist University School of Law receiving his J.D. in 1981. Dickson was a law clerk to Associate Justice Vernon R. Peterson, N.D. Supreme Court from 1981-1982. He has written numerous articles on trial practice. Mr. Dickson serves on the Board of Governors of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America and is a member of the ABA. He was president of the North Dakota Trial Lawyers Association from 1993-1994.

  William E. McKechnie practices law with McKechnie and Associates, PC in Grand Forks, ND. He attended the Citadel where he earned his B.A. in 1974. He holds both a Master's Degree and a Juris Doctorate from the University of North Dakota. McKechnie is a Past President and Board Member of the North Dakota Trial Lawyers Association, a member of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, and a Board certified Civil Trial Specialist -National Board of Trial Advocacy. He is admitted to practice in United States District Courts of North Dakota and Montana, U.S. Courts of Appeal 8th & 9th Circuits, and the U.S. Supreme Court.

3:15-4:15 p.m. Tax Implications of Settlements and Verdicts - Alex Reichert
  Alex Reichert is an associate with the Pearson Christenson Law Firm in Grand Forks, ND. He primarily practices tax litigation in state and federal court. He also has experience working with private business as general counsel and controller for Franchise Concepts Unlimited, a hospitality sector management and development company. Mr. Reichert graduated with distinction from the University of North Dakota School of Law. He is a member of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the North Dakota Trial Lawyers Association.
