NCAA: UND's appeal over Fighting Sioux nickname, logo denied

Herald Staff Report

The NCAA staff review committee today has denied an appeal by the University of North Dakota that asked for the school's removal from a list of schools with American Indian nicknames, images or mascots that are subject to special restrictions.

The NCAA committee decided to allow UND to host the NCAA men's West Regional hockey playoffs in March at Ralph Engelstad Arena "without altering its contract" signed before the NCAA's summer nickname and logo ruling. It means UND will not need to cover up or remove all of its American Indian imagery in the arena.

But UND will not be able to host future championships in the Ralph Engelstad Arena, the committee announced today.

The school does not have the support of the three federally recognized Sioux tribes of North Dakota to use the "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo, the NCAA noted in a statement today. UND can file an appeal with the NCAA Executive Committee.
