We have traced former chair Epstein to his new position as merely an adjunct Professor at the University of Louisville School of Medicine [http://www.louisville.edu/medschool/pharmacology
Formerly Dr. Epstein was a Tenured Associate Professor of UND Pharmacology, Physiology and Therapeutics , and was an acting Chairman of the department. He then became the subject of much criticism at this site. Suddenly Epstein left taking his money while UND watched to see that he did not take the lab equipment. But lab equipment is not the big deal for institutions like UND. They make big money off of the percentage administrative overhead usually between 25 and 30 percent that they get from Federal Corporate research grants.
Pennywise but pound-foolish UND administrators have triumphed again! They can save themselves a lot of grief and preserve UND’s income if they were more diplomatic.

A trail of failures often marks the future of " favored " faculty when they leave UNDSM and after they have milked the system . This outcome suggests the poor quality of the hiring practices at UNDSM which need to be reassessed by the State's Board of Higher Education for the sake of taxpayers . Dr. Epstein , a Tenured Associate Professor of Pharmacology , Physiology and Therapeutics , who was an acting Chairman of the department , has costed the UNDSM a bundle in research equipments and salaries as he has for over 10 years done little of teaching and published few articles on his own , despite of the alleged academic dishonesty, while at UNDSM . He has been receiving a nice salary from both UND plus hefty regular augmentations from Federal Grants , in a double pocketing modus operandi which called for alleged Fraud . Dr. Epstein has apparently resigned from UNDSM for a much better job to his liking , since he left behind all these Goodies . Wouldn't you think that ? Well , searching the Internet on his where about brought a surprise .
The name Paul N. Epstein appears on a department of pharmacology at University of Louisville medical school in KA . The former UNDSM faculty is listed only as an " ADJUNCT Associate Professor " . This implies neither an academic promotion to a professorial rank nor a standard salary from the University there are provided , salary most probably will come only from his grants . No regular faculty appointment and thereby no Tenure . At least a joint appointment with another department was not given . This is a confirmation of value for academic quality as judged by UNDSM administration vs. other medical schools . Therefore , the Editorial Board is right in their expressed opinion . The web site mentioned is correct , but one needs to check the left panel and click the title " adjunct " under faculty . However , I smell rats after going through the Louisville's web site . 1st . The Pharmacology faculty in Louisville has two names formerly from UND , i.e., Drs. David Hein , the Chair of Pharmacology and James Kang , who was forced to resign from UND , with a joint appointment in Pharmacology . This suggests that no other job could be attained in other places since Hein was the one who hired Epstein and feels responsible for him . In this respect , you are right about the quality matter . 2nd. Dr. Epstein's name was probably on the Lousville's site while he was receiving salary from UNDSM . This is in conflict with salary deductions from Federal grants and covering of the moving expenses involved . 3rd. Moving of research equipments from UNDSM to the new location in Louisville may be also challenged , if was done , due to the lack of regular appointment by the university of Louisville . In this case , the equipments becomes the property of UND . One hopes the equipments are still at UNDSM and that the appropriate inventory was done .

You really believe everything you read. Epstein recently received the position of endowed chair of Diabetes research at the Univ of Louisville. It may be as part of the appointment he has an adjunct appointment in the Pharm/Tox dept.
